Boston native Maysles and his brother David, credited with being pioneers of "direct cinema," an offshoot of the French cinema verite, collaborated on some of the most respected and controversial documentaries made in the U.S. Because they were the first to use specialized portable camera and sound equipment, they were able to achieve an unusually candid intimacy with their subjects.
